Inventor Story: Christine Ingemi

Christine Ingemi is a mom of four who got tired of hearing her kids blast their mp3 players.  But what could she do?  Telling them to turn it down maybe worked when she was around, but as soon as she was out of sight, what would stop them from turning it up again?  Something had to be done.

Ingemi learned that children can suffer hearing loss when listening to music at 85 decibels or above and most mp3 players have a maximum volume of 121 decibels, way above the safe volume ceiling.  So she invented headphones that will only allow a maximum volume of 80 decibels, no matter how high an mp3 player or any other device is turned up.

Ingemi designed the product with only her children in view, but soon friends wanted them for their children too.

Ingemi tapped into a huge concern of parents everywhere and when she displayed her product at the first ever Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Children at Work and Play conference, the first such conference addressing the need, she was congratulated by parents and audiologists.

She has since had offers from Radio Disney, among others, to sell her product on their websites.

So what can we learn from this example?  If you have a great product it will almost sell itself?  Not exactly.  Even if you have a great product with mass appeal, you need to plug your product into the market somehow.  Ingemi got connected to the market through the Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Children at Work and Play conference.  By introducing her product in such a way, influential people were able to see her product in action and to approve of it.  This will open many doors for Ingemi, if not immediately, in the future.  Often conferences of this type are the perfect way to introduce a product.  Of course, many products cannot be introduced in this way, because the need they address does not have a conference, but if you product hits a social concern, chances are there is a conference and if there is not, you should organize one, if only to launch your product and not just to raise awareness of the issue your product addresses.
